Legal fireworks I can handle.

Kids playing with fireworks like they're playing cards worry me.
The (illegal in this state) bottle rockets irritate me.

However, I'm pretty sure I just heard a howitzer (or bigger) go off.  I mean, it shook the entire house.  Twice.

Tied for mileage for the week in my group

Sick

Not for time.  I've run 56.3 miles this week, but my other Louisville group member ran it in about 2 hours and 25 minutes less time.

Remembering a co-worker and father who left behind two small kids

I am thinking about a tribute to my former co-worker. In about one
month will be the one year anniversary of his death. He left behind a
wife and two small children:

My intent is to run a tribute run around Iroquois Park, up to 33
miles, asking for a $1 per mile donation to make one last push in
beefing up the college fund that we started raising money for 10
months ago.

As a father, I can't imagine not being around for my kids, and so, if
I can make a small gesture in support of his kids, at least they'll
have support from the legacy their father left behind.

Apple's central planning society

I read "Inside every chief exec, there's a Soviet Planner" about 4
months ago. Since then, all I can do is equate Apple with a centrally
planned economy.

My principle reason for thinking this way is the control Apple
exercises over the App Store. There are clear benefits to this model
early on. Apple can exercise a central vision over all of the
applications in the store, create a minimum standard for user
experience, and engender trust by screening out the bad apples.

However, with 1 billion+ downloads, does this central planning become
too unwieldy? The larger the number of downloads, the bigger the
bottleneck becomes. Sure you can throw extra bodies at the approval
process, but those new hires are less likely to be fully indoctrinated
into the full vision, and pretty soon an application gets through that
gives the entire company a black eye.

Adjustments will be made, but in a rigid structure, these adjustments
will be less fluid.
